Mike D’Amato, a member of the 1968 New York Jets Super Bowl championship team, died at the age of 80.

On Tuesday, the Jets announced D’Amato’s death from a cardiac arrest in late November.

D’Amato only played one NFL season with the Jets, appearing in 15 games and winning Super Bowl III.

D’Amato has two signature plays from his football career, both of which came in the postseason.

D’Amato brought George Atkinson to the ground in the final stretch of the AFL Championship game against the Oakland Raiders before the dangerous punt returner could gain momentum.

D’Amato repeated that feat in Super Bowl III, defeating the Baltimore Colts 16-7.

According to the Jets, “when Johnny Unitas came in, he gave them a little lift.” ‘They came down and scored their lone touchdown, and it appeared that they were gaining momentum.

‘And I remember making a tackle on a punt and breaking their momentum because they thought they were going to go from there, I guess.’

D’Amato also spent one season with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League.

D’Amato worked for an automobile and equipment leasing company after retiring from professional football. He also worked for his alma mater, Hofstra University.
