Speaking on the eve of the publication of his new book Unbreakable, Ronnie O’Sullivan claims that his problems with drinking and drugs caused him to “lose personality and confidence.”

Reacting during his World Snooker Championship match against Luca Brecel, seven-time world snooker champion Ronnie O’Sullivan acknowledges that drug and alcohol abuse cost him years of his career.

The 47-year-old, who lost to eventual champion Luca Brecel in the World Championship quarterfinals this year, checked into rehab in 2000 after losing the Irish Masters title to a man who tested positive for cannabis in 1998.

And the snooker great has described how difficult he found it to “live clean” and navigate social situations when attempting to change his lifestyle.

On the same day as the publication of his new book Unbreakable, O’Sullivan told the BBC, “There are enormous gaps.”

I lost six or seven years because I drank and used cannabis. After that, I had to deal with things off the table for four years, which I didn’t handle well.

 

“Snooker wasn’t my main concern. Though I suppose everyone has those issues, there were ten years during which I didn’t accomplish anything. I didn’t practice much because I wasn’t mentally prepared to succeed.”

O’Sullivan continued his explanation of how he got nervous when he tried to interact with others, mentioning that he would “run for the corner” in a crowded place.

“I lost my personality and confidence and needed to take substances just to feel like I could socialise,” he stated.
