Newcastle wants to replace Nick Pope with an England international; Manchester United, Arsenal, and Tottenham are also interested.
With goalie Nick Pope out for the majority of the season, Newcastle is reportedly considering his international colleague as a backup.
According to reports, Newcastle United is eager to replace injured England goalkeeper Nick Pope with a different stopper.
Pope will likely be sidelined for approximately four months following surgery to realign his shoulder, which occurred during the match against Manchester United. Despite the fact that it’s far from certain, manager Eddie Howe stated there’s “still a chance” he’ll be well enough to play for England at the summer European Championships.
Despite conceding three goals to Everton in second-choice Martin Dźbravka’s first league game of the season, the Magpies have been among the most defensively sound teams in the division since Pope’s arrival in the summer of 2022.
Sam Johnstone, the goalkeeper for Crystal Palace, is reportedly the focus of the club’s hierarchy, according to The Star.
Although Johnstone just signed a four-year contract extension with Palace last month, the Magpies are promoting him as an affordable cover who might challenge for the No. 1 jersey after Pope returns.
By the end of the season, he had made a name for himself as the team’s first choice after relocating to south London in June 2022. With 29 Palace appearances, he has overall kept 10 clean sheets. He was called back into the England lineup to preserve his fourth clean sheet in four caps against Australia.
Although David de Gea, Aaron Ramsdale, and Hugo Lloris are also rumored to be in the running for the keeper, an injury suffered in Palace’s 2-1 loss to Liverpool may put an end to Newcastle’s plans for him.
Since leaving Manchester United in the summer, De Gea is a free agent. Meanwhile, Lloris is out of favor at Tottenham, Ramsdale is competing with David Raya in goal for Arsenal.
