Alexander Isak marked his return from injury by scoring the opener in Newcastle United‘s 4-1 victory over Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.
It took the Swede just 13 minutes to break the deadlock at St James’ Park when he controlled an excellent ball through by Lewis Miley and cooly finish past goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
Not long after, Raheem Sterling equalised for the visitors but the Magpies surged to victory after half-time with goals from Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon.
The win saw Eddie Howe‘s side return to winning ways in the Premier League after losing 2-0 to AFC Bournemouth prior to the international break.
“We really had energy today, maybe because we’ve had some time to rest. But the quality is there, we just need to perform all together and we did that today.
“I was very happy he [Lewis Miley] got that assist. I think he played brilliant. That was probably my only chance today so happy to get the goal.”
The 24-year-old had missed the last five games with a groin issue but managed to get 83 minutes under his belt before being withdrawn.
And in music to every Newcastle fan’s ears, Isak confirmed he got through the game unscathed.
Isak said: “It’s been five games but it hasn’t been that long but we have a lot of games. It doesn’t feel like I’ve been away for too long.
“You work really hard to be as fit as possible when you’re back playing so you don’t have to have that time to get in physically and technically. I felt good. I felt ready. I’m happy.”
With Callum Wilson (hamstring) injured, Isak is the club’s only fit senior striker. He is set to lead the line when Newcastle visit the French capital to take on Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Indeed, Isak and his teammates must avoid defeat in order to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive.
“It’s going to be a tough game,” he said. “It’s a tough side but we played brilliantly against them last time. We have to go there with the same attitude.”
