John Tavares Wants Extension With Maple Leafs
John Tavares is seeking a contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs before he becomes a free agent.
Despite much speculation of significant changes last offseason, the Maple Leafs seem set to continue with their current roster. Talks have emerged about superstar Mitch Marner possibly securing an extension, and Tavares is also part of these discussions.
Chris Johnston of TSN’s Insider Trading reported that Tavares, the former captain, has expressed his desire to remain with the team and is aiming for a new deal before free agency begins. Johnston noted, “Tavares has made it very clear he wants to stay in Toronto and has no interest in testing the free agent market.”
However, while Tavares is committed to staying, contract talks haven’t progressed to the point where both sides are comfortable with the terms.
Currently in the final year of his seven-year contract with an annual cap hit of $11 million, Tavares is 34 and likely approaching his last significant deal. His next contract will likely come with a lower salary.
Johnston also mentioned the possibility of utilizing deferred salary compensation to bridge any financial gaps in the new deal. Tavares wouldn’t be the first to take this route, as Jake McCabe signed a similar deal during the offseason, and several players on the Carolina Hurricanes have similar contracts.
Despite the potential adjustments to money and terms, both sides are motivated to finalize a deal that will keep Tavares in a Maple Leafs uniform longer.
Over the last eight years, the Maple Leafs have developed one of the NHL’s top offensive teams, but have only secured one playoff series win. There is optimism that the 2024-25 season will bring a more successful outcome.
