It is far too early to draw conclusions about anything just two weeks into the 2024-25 season. At the same time, it is a foregone conclusion that the Oklahoma City Thunder are one of the league’s stronger teams, with the potential to win the Western Conference. After a historic 57-25 season in which they finished first in the Western Conference, the Thunder are off to a quick start this season, as they are one of just two undefeated teams after two weeks.
Oklahoma City leads the Western Conference standings with a 7-0 record after defeating the Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic, and Los Angeles Clippers. Aside from being unbeaten (7-0), the Thunder have wowed with their powerful offensive and outstanding defense. Speaking of which, the Thunder are the only team in the league that allows fewer than 100 points a game to their opponents.
Overall, the Thunder could not have asked for a better start to the season, especially given they were the first team in NBA history to start a season 7-0 and win all seven games by double digits, according to Brandon Rahbar of Daily Thunder. Two of their seven wins have been by at least 20 points, while all of the Thunder’s victories have been by at least 12.
Thunder early season success translates to history
Regardless of the data or measurements used, it is evident that the Thunder have earned the right to name themselves the top team in the NBA early in the 2024-25 season.
Given the team’s success, Gilgeous-Alexander appears to be the early MVP frontrunner, and what truly strikes out is this team’s devotion to defensive greatness, regardless of their opponent. Although they are still young and lack playoff experience, Oklahoma City has demonstrated significant progress throughout the years.
Perhaps the most striking aspect of this Thunder team is how humble and pleasant they genuinely are. After starting the season 6-0, Jalen Williams demonstrated this by not getting ahead of himself and instead noting that the squad is taking things one game at a time.
“It’s cool for sure. I don’t think we will get ahead of ourselves. We got to play against another good team. We’ll have fun on the three-hour journey home. “Then it’s right back to it,” Williams explained. “It’s definitely a cool thing to write your name in history and have this be our start, but obviously, we know what we want to do down the line.”
The prospect of adding more depth makes the Thunder an even scarier club than they already are. Isaiah Hartenstein is now out with a fractured hand, Jaylin Williams has a hamstring issue, and Kenrich Williams has yet to play due to a knee injury. All three players will play crucial bench roles for this club when they return, allowing the affluent to get richer.
The Thunder’s winning streak to start the year will eventually end. However, this club has emerged as the clear favorite in the West due to their aggressive style of play on both sides of the floor. This is not the only history the Thunder will make during the 2024-25 season.
