After an outstanding last two seasons with Kansas State, former wide receiver Malik Knowles was surprisingly not selected in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Although Knowles spent his first season on the reserve/non-football injury list, he eventually signed with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent. Kansas State supporters were disappointed since they know he can make plays both as a kick returner and at receiver.
During the Vikings’ training camp this summer, Knowles was released with an injury designation prior to the 53-man roster deadline.
The former Wildcat has had a difficult time, but he has now been given another chance by one of the NFL’s top young teams, who have a reputation for nurturing young receivers.
The Green Bay Packers said on Wednesday that Knowles had been added to the practice squad. TJ Luther, who was placed on the disabled list, is being replaced by the 24-year-old wide receiver.
During his stellar five-year career at Kansas State, the two-time All-American accumulated 2,307 scrimmage yards and 18 touchdowns. Knowles recorded a career-high 889 yards from scrimmage and five touchdowns on 56 touches in his last season at K-State.
Knowles was one of the more active special teams players as a returner. Kick returns totaled 1,691 yards for the 6-foot-2 receiver, while punt returns totaled 3,998 yards.
In addition, Knowles’ kick return average (33.1 yards per game) placed him fourth in the nation. The former Wildcat standout may play this season or at least remain on the practice squad according to the NFL’s new kickoff rule.
