The picks being sent to the Warriors are the Mavericks’ 2031 second-round selection and the least advantageous of the 2025 second-round selections that were originally owned by the Denver Nuggets and the Philadelphia 76ers, both of which are currently in the hands of the Hornets. Anthony Slater, who covers the Warriors for The Athletic, made this discovery.

The Los Angeles Lakers were among the many playoff-contending teams in the league that reportedly showed interest in Thompson. According to ESPN, the former Warriors guard received other offers for four years and more money, but he chose to sign with Dallas instead of accepting them.

Since the Golden State Warriors selected him in the 2011 NBA Draft, the five-time All-Star has played his whole career with the organization. Over the course of his career, Thompson has averaged 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 41.3% field goal and three-point shooting percentages. Many people believe that he and current Warriors guard Stephen Curry were the greatest shooting combo in NBA history when they played together.

Thompson played 14 games as a sixth man last season, making his career’s first bench appearance. With a 46-36 record, the Warriors placed 10th in the West and were unable to advance past the play-in round. After facing the Boston Celtics in five games during their NBA Finals trip, the Mavericks are back from that trip.

In order to acquire shooting guard Quentin Grimes, a native of Texas, Dallas dealt guard Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second-round picks to the Detroit Pistons earlier this offseason.

Also, according to reports, Mavs forward Derrick Jones Jr. and the Los Angeles Clippers reached an agreement on a three-year, $30 million contract.

Multiple sources stated that Naji Marshall, a free agency small forward for the New Orleans Pelicans, and the Mavs had an agreement on a three-year, $27 million contract prior to the announcement of Jones’ signing with the Clippers.

With Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, P.J. Washington, and either Dereck Lively II or Daniel Gafford at center, Thompson will probably start for the Mavs. Grimes and Marshall will probably fill in for Hardaway and Green’s minutes, while Thompson will presumably take up most of Jones Jr.’s time in the starting lineup.

In addition to missing the 2019–20 and 2020–21 seasons due to an Achilles tendon injury, Thompson also dealt with an ACL tear.

Thompson has demonstrated that he is a superb long-range shooter and that he can play a part on a playoff team, even though his defense hasn’t been as strong since his return.
