Kyrie Irving, a point guard for the Dallas Mavericks, suffered a broken left hand during practice earlier this month. The organization revealed on Tuesday that Irving had surgery to repair it.
The 32-year-old’s return date is unknown, but according to ESPN, the Mavericks are hoping that Irving will be fit for the start of training camp in a few months.
Eight-time All-Star Irving and Luka Doncic helped lift Dallas to the NBA Finals, where they lost in five games to the Boston Celtics last month. After a regular season in which he averaged 25.6 points and 5.2 assists per game, Irving averaged 22.1 points and 5.1 assists across 22 games during the playoffs.
Having won his first NBA championship with Cleveland in 2016, he was going for his second one. He was the first overall choice by the Cavaliers in the 2011 NBA Draft.
Irving has played for Cleveland, Boston, the Brooklyn Nets, and Dallas throughout the course of his 13-season career, averaging 23.6 points and 5.7 assists. In February 2023, he signed an extension with Dallas during the offseason after joining the Mavericks in a trade with the Nets.
Earlier this month, Irving was a major factor in luring Klay Thompson, a free agent who had played his whole career with the Golden State Warriors, to the Mavericks.
