Enzo Maresca’s Leicester City fitness coach has denied reports that the Italian boss could depart the King Power Stadium for Sevilla. Maresca’s future is one of the hot topics at City this summer, after he expressed his dissatisfaction with sections of the club’s organisation, with some close to him suggesting he might “consider his options” if changes were not made to the decision-making positions. Furthermore, Sevilla is likely to select a new manager this summer and has Maresca, a two-time Uefa Cup winner with them, on their short list.
However, Marcos Alvarez, City’s first-team fitness coach who joined Maresca last year after working with him at Parma, has stated that his whole concentration is on City. He didn’t rule out Maresca joining Sevilla in the future, but not this summer.
We are focused on Leicester, and there is currently no other option,” Alvarez told Canal Sur Radio in Spain. “He loves Sevilla, just like the Sevillistas do, because he has played an essential role in the club’s history. I suppose their paths will cross in the future.”
Alvarez initially met Maresca at Sevilla, where the fitness coach was starting out and the Italian was a player for the La Liga club. Even then, he had a feeling Maresca would become a manager. “He is very methodical and organised,” Alvarez stated. “I was pleasantly pleased, because when I had him as a player, he was already restless in those areas.
“He is extremely methodical and organised,” Alvarez stated. “I was pleasantly pleased, although it’s true that even as a player, he was restless in certain areas. “Some players on the squad question why tactical circumstances exist, why this is done and nothing else. Every team has players with coaching abilities, and Enzo was one of them.
Football has evolved over the years, and today’s coaches are quite knowledgeable. That was my initial impression when I met with Enzo two and a half years ago.
He shows me his football debates, and I was startled to see files on his computer with the names of 15 or 20 world-class coaches. They examined how (Jurgen) Klopp utilises pressure, how (Thomas) Tuchel attempts defensive plays, how Manuel Pellegrini, who has worked with him, prefers to play a defensive line, and, of course, how (Pep) Guardiola plays.”
