SADLY NEWS: Coach Sean McDermott’s statement to John Murphy (the Buffalo Bills’ voice) regarding his retirement.

John Murphy, the Buffalo Bills radio voice, is retiring after 35 years.

Voice of the Buffalo Bills” John Murphy, who has spent the last 19 years as the team’s radio play-by-play announcer, has announced his exit from the booth. Murphy previously spent 16 years as the Bills’ color analyst, first getting involved with the team in 1984.

While he is stepping back from the play-by-play duties, he remains open to contributing to gameday broadcasts in a new role.

Murphy was elected into the Buffalo Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 2019 and will be honoured with the Dick Gallagher Legacy Award in 2022 for his contributions to the Buffalo community. He also co-authored the book If These Walls Could Talk: Buffalo Bills, which offers fans an intimate look at the team’s past.

Murphy has had absences in previous seasons owing to health issues, including a stroke at the close of the 2022 season. During Murphy’s absences, broadcaster Chris Brown stepped in on the Buffalo Bills radio network. Murphy expressed a passionate desire to start a new chapter in his life, emphasising the close relationships he has made over the years. “I’ll miss it greatly,” he remarked. “I’ll miss the people more than anything.” He disclosed that he and his wife, Mary, made the decision to walk aside together, and that he is at peace with it.

Bills owner Terry Pegula lauded Murphy’s passion and long-standing dedication, adding, “John’s love and enthusiasm for the Bills and Western New York has been evident in the booth for the past 30 years.” We will all miss his excellent calls and enthusiasm as a play-by-play broadcaster. We continue to wish him and his family the best of luck with his recovery, and we hope that he will be able to continue working with us in the future.”Sean McDermott, the Bills’ head coach, said, “Murph, congratulations on a fantastic career. It’s been an honour to serve with you. You are one of the best to ever do it.” General Manager Brandon Beane said, “You’ll always be a Buffalo legend, big in the community, and big with the Buffalo Bills.”
