A quarterback Jordan Love, and now they’re making a major swing to better….
The Green Bay Packers were rewarded for their patience with quarterback Jordan Love, and now they’re making a major push to upgrade the second-year starter’s supporting cast. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Packers are poised to sign free agency running back Josh Jacobs.
For a brief while, Green Bay appeared to be building the league’s top backfield. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the team is releasing running back Aaron Jones, meaning Jacobs is effectively replacing him rather than complementing him on the ground. That’s terrific news for opposition defences and fantasy football managers who have made early preparations to target Love and/or Jacobs.
Jacobs appeared to be splitting time with Jones, but he will be the primary point of the Packers’ run game. The 2022 All-Pro could also benefit from joining an offence with a more solid quarterback position than last year, when the Las Vegas Raiders relied on Jimmy Garoppolo and Aidan O’Connell as starters. As he approached free agency, Jacobs was projected to be a mid- to lower-tier RB1 in standard fantasy leagues. That mindset has not changed much since he moved to Green Bay.
The same can be stated about Love’s position. The 2020 first-round pick progressed steadily during last season. In his final eight regular-season starts, he threw for 2,150 yards and 18 touchdowns, with one interception. Expectations are reasonably high for 2024. With so many players in or around their primes, the Packers offence as a whole is set to take a big step forward.
If his second half in 2023 is any indication of what’s to come, Love should be considered a fringe QB1 with plenty of upside.
