When the Memphis Grizzlies selected Xavier Tillman in the first round of the NBA, it seemed like he would be a wonderful fit. Many Michigan State supporters thought that he may play in the NBA in a manner similar to that of Draymond Green because of his hard play style and high IQ.
Similar to Draymond, Tillman started his career at Michigan State slowly before blossoming into a standout by his junior year. The Grizzlies leaped at the chance to select him in the second round when he departed after his third season. Like Draymond, he moved to Memphis to join old colleague Jaren Jackson Jr., although his role was quite restricted during his first two years there. In fact, over his first two seasons, Tillman started 14 more games than Draymond (13).

While he’s being retained and guaranteed a solid chunk of change in the final year of his rookie contract, he could earn himself a nice payday if he has another big season. He took a step in the right direction in 2022-23 but he needs to become more than just a decent bench player, he needs to show that he can be a legit starter in this league.
If the former Michigan State star can put up somewhere between 10-15 points and 6-8 rebounds per game, we could see him earn a hefty contract next summer and be set for life.
Spartan fans everywhere will be rooting him on.
Even though he’s promised a sizable salary in the last year of his rookie deal and is being kept around, a strong season might fetch him a sizable paycheck. In 2022–23, he made progress, but he still needs to prove that he can be a reliable starter in this league and not simply a good bench player.
