Joe Milton has a cannon, so give it to him. And a little flair as well.
During Tennessee’s pro day on Wednesday, the NFL draft prospect displayed his strong right arm, culminating one long pass with a backflip:
Milton’s draft stock is in doubt, but his athleticism is not.
Milton did not rank in the top eight quarterbacks and was not listed among the top 200 prospects on the most recent big board released by the B/R NFL Scouting Department for this year’s draft.
Milton, who played for Tennessee (2021–23) and Michigan (2018–20) in his collegiate career, completed 64.7% of his throws for 2,831 yards, 20 touchdowns, and five interceptions in his most recent outing.
The fact that it was easily the 24-year-old’s best college campaign after six years in school casts some doubts on his ability to consistently produce at the next level, though he certainly has elite arm strength.
Tennessee will need to break in a new quarterback as it prepares for the 2024 season, its fourth under head coach Josh Heupel. Starting pitcher Joe Milton is leaving, and Nico Iamaleava, a redshirt freshman, will take over.
Working with him excites his pass-catchers. Iamaleava, the No. 6 player in the country for the 2023 recruiting class, was once a prized prospect.
After getting a close-up look with Iamaleava, wide receiver Bru McCoy is impressed.
To be honest, I haven’t played with Nico yet, but I can state that. Nico is incredibly adept with his feet, based on what I’ve seen,” McCoy said during the team’s Pro Day, which aired on the SEC Network on Wednesday. “He excels at extending plays. clearly lacks Joe’s arm strength, but Nico’s running prowess, in my opinion, more than makes up for it. It’s not like Joe couldn’t run.
Iamaleava demonstrated that in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, the team’s bowl game, as he ran for three touchdowns against Iowa. He also had a TD and 151 yards passing.
