Bridgewater, 32, had hinted at a return earlier this month after leading his high school alma mater, Miami Northwestern, to a state championship in his first year as head coach. Discussions about his NFL return have reportedly been ongoing for some time, with Campbell emphasizing Bridgewater’s unique value to the team.
Last appearing for the Lions in 2023, Bridgewater recorded no pass attempts in his single game with the team. Now, he rejoins Detroit as they gear up for a playoff run, bolstering the quarterback room with his veteran presence.
Campbell Highlights Bridgewater’s Leadership
Head coach Dan Campbell expressed excitement about Bridgewater’s return, citing his ability to elevate the team on and off the field.
“To add someone with his experience who’s stayed in shape and has been actively throwing is a big win for us,” Campbell said. “He brings professionalism and leadership that will help us prepare for the playoffs.”
Bridgewater will support a quarterback lineup led by Jared Goff, with second-year player Hendon Hooker and practice squad QB Jake Fromm providing depth. Campbell clarified that Bridgewater’s arrival doesn’t reflect a lack of faith in Hooker.
