Lions, RB David Montgomery agree to a two-year contract extension worth $18.25 million
The Detroit Lions have secured one of their key offensive contributors for the future.
Running back David Montgomery has agreed to a two-year contract extension worth $18.25 million, including $10.5 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. The deal, which keeps Montgomery under contract through the 2027 season, was later confirmed by the Lions.
Montgomery, selected 73rd overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, has been a reliable performer since entering the league. Over his six-year career, he has accumulated 4,895 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns on 1,197 carries. After four seasons with the Chicago Bears, including a standout 2020 season with 1,070 rushing yards, Montgomery joined the Lions in 2023 as a free agent.
In his debut season with Detroit, the 27-year-old running back recorded 1,015 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on 219 carries, along with 117 receiving yards on 16 catches. His performance, combined with that of rookie Jahmyr Gibbs, helped propel the Lions to their first NFC Championship Game appearance since 1991.
This season, Montgomery and Gibbs have continued their strong partnership, each tallying over 360 yards and four touchdowns in the first four games. The Lions’ commitment to Montgomery ensures the duo will remain a cornerstone of their backfield for years to come.
Following their bye week, Montgomery and the Lions will face the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET.
