Eli Drinkwitz Praises Alabama’s Ryan Williams’ Natural Talent
Alabama Crimson Tide’s top pass-catcher may be young, but his talent far surpasses his age and limited experience. Freshman Ryan Williams, who reclassified into the 2024 recruiting class, has stunned many with his standout performances as Alabama’s leading receiver. Despite being only 17 years old, Williams has quickly made a name for himself in college football with his remarkable strength at the catch point and his ability to extend plays after catching the ball. His age suggests he shouldn’t be as polished and productive as he is, but Williams seems to be a special case.
Alabama boasts a roster full of offensive talent, but Williams manages to outshine his teammates. Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz has the task of figuring out how to contain Williams, which is no easy feat. “Special player, special talent, obviously,” Drinkwitz remarked, acknowledging the challenge.
Since the start of his first season, Williams has consistently impressed, demonstrating a range of skills that have left fans and analysts in awe. His competitive spirit and determination are evident; as Drinkwitz noted, “I don’t know that age is that big of a factor if you have those kinds of gifts.”
So far this season, Williams has racked up 649 yards and seven touchdowns on 31 receptions, including a standout performance against the Georgia Bulldogs, where he recorded 177 yards and a crucial late-game touchdown. His exceptional balance, speed, and coordination make him a serious threat, especially once he has the ball in the open field. Missouri’s secondary, including Toriano Pride Jr., Nic DeLoach, and Dreyden Norwood, will have their hands full trying to contain Williams.
In his most recent game against Tennessee, Williams contributed 73 yards and his seventh touchdown of the season. Despite Alabama’s loss, his efforts kept the game close. While Alabama has other talented receivers, including Washington transfer Germie Bernard, Kobe Prentice, and Kendrick Law, Williams clearly stands out as a future star.
Although he won’t be eligible for the NFL draft for two more seasons, Ryan Williams is already playing at a veteran level, and college football will have to contend with his talent for the foreseeable future.
