Former Vikings QB Among Top Options for Packers After Jordan Love Injury
The Green Bay Packers suffered a significant setback during their season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles in Sao Paulo, Brazil. While the team lost by five points, the bigger concern was the injury to starting quarterback Jordan Love, who sustained an apparent severe ankle sprain. Love hobbled off the field with assistance from team trainers after being hurt on the third-to-last play of the game. Backup quarterback Malik Willis stepped in for the final plays but struggled, highlighting his inexperience in both regular-season NFL games and within the Packers’ offensive system.
In light of Love’s injury, ESPN’s Rob Demovsky explored possible options for the Packers if Love is out for an extended period. Among the candidates mentioned was former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kellen Mond. Mond, currently a free agent, has had brief stints with several NFL teams, including the Vikings, Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, and New Orleans Saints. Despite playing in only one NFL game, Mond, a third-round pick from Texas A&M in 2021, offers potential as a backup option.
While Mond lacks significant NFL experience, he is still just 25 years old and could be a low-cost option for Green Bay. His price tag would likely be modest, given his recent release from the Saints, and the Packers wouldn’t need to give up any assets to sign him. Demovsky pointed out that other teams have managed to make the most of similar situations. He referenced the Minnesota Vikings’ signing of Josh Dobbs last year after Kirk Cousins went down with an Achilles injury. Despite minimal time with the team, Dobbs led Minnesota to a win and went 2-2 as their starter over the next four games.
If Love’s injury prognosis is long-term, the Packers may opt for a more experienced quarterback, such as Ryan Tannehill, rather than relying on Willis or practice squad QB Sean Clifford. However, if Love’s absence is short-term, signing someone like Mond to provide depth and compete for the role could be a practical solution.
Ultimately, the Packers’ decision will depend on Love’s recovery timeline, which remains uncertain as of Friday night according to head coach Matt LaFleur. The team must assess their options and determine whether to bring in a veteran quarterback or roll with a younger, less experienced player like Mond.
