Some of the Dallas roster is gearing up for the upcoming season
Even though it’s the dead of the NBA offseason, it’s still exciting news that players are getting together to work out in the summer. Like this tidbit of information from NBA insider Marc Stein: this week, the Mavericks, including Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson, are in Los Angeles for practice and workouts.
The most recent information about Irving, who underwent surgery in July to fix a broken left hand, is the true news from Stein. According to Stein, Irving is working with the club in a limited capacity-right now and anticipates receiving full clearance by October 1st, when training camp begins.
Otherwise, this is mostly standard stuff, but you are always welcome to see it. Despite the Mavericks reaching the NBA Finals for the first time since 2011 this past June, the front office did not rest—iin came Thompson, Naji Marshall, and Quentin Grimes, all expected to have major roles with the team this season. While obviously Thompson will have a big role as a starter and an upgrade on the volume shooter once provided by the now-departed Tim Hardaway Jr., Marshall and Grimes should be expected to play a decent amount as well. Marshall will help fill the void from Derrick Jones Jr.’s departure as the dirty-work, defensive-minded wing, while Grimes will potentially be filling in for Josh Green, who was part of the Thompson sign-and-trade. Grimes projects as a more traditional 3-and-D role player compared to Green, who struggled with his three-point consistency and perimeter defense last season, despite his passing prowess. More time to adapt new faces to the existing roster is always good.
Dallas has more than a month to recover and get ready for training camp. With arguably their best team in years, the Mavericks will be defending their Western Conference title.
