LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier declines transfer portal overtures and remains with Tigers

One of college football’s most talented backup quarterbacks is staying in Baton Rouge for the 2023 season.

Shea Dixon reports that LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, who is one of the best backup quarterbacks in the country going into the 2023 campaign behind Jayden Daniels, plans to remain in Baton Rouge. Given his skill set, Nussmeier might have been a victim of the transfer portal, but he turned down offers as a top player in his position entering before Monday’s spring deadline.

While Daniels begins his final season with the Tigers after leading LSU to 10 victories and a division championship during Brian Kelly’s first season as coach, Nussmeier still has three seasons left to play. In the spring, Daniels and Nussmeier split reps with the first team.

Prior to LSU’s spring game last month, Kelly stated, “We have two starters (at quarterback),” according to The Paul Finebaum Show. “In the SEC, they can both prevail. They are both very skilled players. We are fortunate and blessed. It is challenging to have two. It’s crucial that we keep working with the first unit on both of them on Saturday. Garrett will also have the chance to play with the first.”
