Police investigating death of US ice hockey player Adam Johnson who died in ‘freak accident’
Adam Johnson, an American ice hockey player, passed away on Saturday following a “freak accident” while competing for the Nottingham Panthers in England. The tragedy is being looked into by the police.
Johnson looked to have a major injury following a collision with a Sheffield Steelers player during the second quarter of the Panthers’ game against the team.
Johnson passed away “following a freak accident at the game,” the Panthers confirmed on Sunday, asking fans to leave the Utilita Arena in Sheffield as soon as possible. His age was 29.
On Monday, South Yorkshire Police (SYP) announced that they are looking into the situation.
On Saturday, October 28, at 8:25 p.m., we received a call regarding a player who had suffered a major injury during a Sheffield Steelers game.
When officers and other emergency personnel arrived on the scene, a man in his 20s was brought to the hospital with significant injuries. Regretfully, the hospital later declared him dead.
“Our investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is still ongoing, and our officers are still at the scene conducting inquiries.”
Despite the fact that SYP’s officers have left the site, the larger investigation is still ongoing and will take some time “due to the complex nature of this tragic and unprecedented incident,” the organization said in a new statement on Tuesday.
The SYP statement went on to mention the specialized judges who conduct death investigations: “As with all unexpected and sudden deaths, it is standard practice for police to investigate the circumstances fully and feedback our findings to HM Coroner.”
