The Vegas Golden Knights have been linked to Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner, who is reportedly set to be transferred this summer.
In an attempt to improve their offense, many have connected Marner to Vegas in a trade after they lost important forwards Chandler Stephenson and Jonathan Marchessault to free agency. With the new PuckGM tool on the website PuckPedia, users can now construct their own trades. One user suggested sending defenseman Alex Pietrangelo to Vegas in exchange for Mitch Marner, along with other pieces.
Maple Leafs get:
- Alex Pietrangelo
- William Karlsson
Golden Knights get:
- Mitch Marner
- Timothy Liljegren
On paper, the 2-for-2 deal seems to make a lot of sense. Pietrangelo would provide Toronto’s defensive a boost, and Karlsson—who scored 60 points in his previous campaign—would provide some offensive punch. In addition, he has three years remaining on his contract, which pays him $5.9 million annually.
In the meantime, Marner would provide Vegas with a game-changing offensive addition who could set up plays for Jack Eichel and Mark Stone. In addition, the Golden Knights would receive Liljegren, a previous first-round selection who might assist in occupying Pietrangelo’s void. This offseason, he also signed a two-year, $6 million contract with Toronto, but trade rumors have continued to include him.
Pietrangelo, like Marner, has a full no-movement clause, so he would need to authorize the trade. However, he still has three years remaining on his contract, which earns him $8.8 million each season.
