On Wednesday, December 2, 2020, the “Midnight Sky” singer appeared on The Howard Stern Show to discuss her work and love life. Cyrus, who released her seventh studio album Plastic Hearts the week before, told Howard Stern that her 10-year relationship with Hemsworth ended because “there was too much conflict,” and that their divorce in 2019 had nothing to do with her recovery. “When I get home, I want to feel anchored by someone,” she explained. “I don’t get off on drama or fighting.”
“I’m an intense person who doesn’t like to sit and reflect on things, so instead of pondering the purpose of the situation, I clung to what was left of that house, which was him and me,” she told Stern. “I loved him very much then, still do, and always will.”
She also shared with Stern that she hadn’t known it was possible to marry Hemsworth. “We had been together since we were 16,” she said. “Our house burned down. We were engaged, but I don’t think we ever really thought we’d get married. When we lost our house in Malibu—which, if you listen to my voice before and after the fire, you can hear how much that trauma affected me. I was in South Africa at the time and couldn’t come home, and my animals were tied to a post at the beach. I lost everything.”
At the time, a source told Entertainment Tonight that Hemsworth wasn’t upset by Miley’s Howard Stern interview about him and is focused on his relationship with model Gabriella Brooks. “Liam wasn’t bothered by Miley’s recent interview where she mentioned the conflicts in their marriage. He was very hurt when they initially broke up, but he has moved on and is happy with Gabriella,” the source said. “He’s very traditional, and Gabriella shares his values and gets along well with his family. Their relationship is easygoing, and they have similar backgrounds.”
