Green Bay Packers: Quarterback Cut Candidate Before 2024 Training Camp
The Green Bay Packers are considering roster cuts before the upcoming training camp, a common practice among NFL teams. As camp approaches, there will be position battles that could result in unforeseen cuts before the start of the 2024 season.
During the previous season, there were significant uncertainties surrounding the quarterback position for the Packers. Fans were curious about Jordan Love’s capabilities and how the backup quarterback performed. When the team’s record was 2-5, some supporters even advocated for Sean Clifford to replace Love.
However, that scenario didn’t materialize, and now Love is gearing up to progress and assume a leadership role for the upcoming season.
Green Bay Packers Quarterback Sean Clifford a Cut Candidate Before 2024 Training Camp
It would come as a surprise if the Packers decided to release quarterback Sean Clifford prior to training camp. Despite Clifford’s struggles in offseason practices and the stronger performance of rookie Michael Pratt from Tulane, letting go of Clifford would be unexpected. Currently, Clifford is designated as the backup to Jordan Love.
According to Sayre Bedinger of dairylandexpress.com, Clifford is identified as one of six potential candidates for release by the Packers before training camp. Bedinger pointed out:
“It’s uncommon for teams to carry only two quarterbacks during the offseason when they have 90-man rosters, but it wouldn’t be shocking if the Packers were disappointed enough with Sean Clifford’s performance during the 2023 fifth-round draft pick’s off-season workouts to decide to move on.
“Clifford was constantly throwing interceptions during OTAs and minicamp and was outplayed by seventh-round rookie Michael Pratt. It’s possible that the Packers will choose a completely different third quarterback to support Jordan Love instead.
“One possible option is veteran Ryan Tannehill, who didn’t cross paths with Matt LaFleur in Tennessee but who could raise the quarterback position’s floor in case Jordan Love has to miss any time. Because if Clifford’s rough performance during OTAs and minicamp showed us or taught us anything, it’s that the Packers need to be better prepared in the event that Jordan Love has to miss any extensive time.
“Consider last year, for example. What if Love had to miss two or three games during a clear playoff push for the Packers? Having to turn to Sean Clifford to start several games in November or December would have been disastrous. Last season, the Packers got away with it, but 67 quarterbacks started games in the league. The odds are good that they’ll need to rely on their backup for at least a little bit.
“And that cannot be Sean Clifford. The Packers must make a move to enhance their QB2 situation and perhaps reduce their losses with the former Penn State starter.”
Could the Packers release Clifford and sign free-agent quarterback Ryan Tannehill? While this is a possibility, it could detract from Michael Pratt’s snaps. If the intention is to retain only two quarterbacks on the roster, it would be wiser to let Clifford and Pratt vie for the position. The Packers should only consider adding Tannehill if Jordan Love is injured, a situation they hope to avoid. Cutting Clifford before training camp would be a perplexing decision.
