The Leafs have received inquiries about Mitch Marner from “multiple teams.”
The Toronto Maple Leafs overcame a 1-3 postseason deficit, handled a bench brawl, lost to the Boston Bruins in the first round of the playoffs, held press conferences to conclude the season, and fired head coach Sheldon Keefe in less than two weeks, from April 30 to May 9.
The hiring of a new coach—of which a “odds-on favorite” candidate has already been identified—and the possible trade or extension of star player Mitch Marner are the next set of boxes the Leafs must cross.
With Marner’s current contract having a no-move clause that expires at the end of the next season, the second of the aforementioned two items may seem difficult to complete, but in a May 9 column for the Toronto Star, former Leafs player and NHL analyst Nick Kypreos revealed something intriguing that suggests otherwise.
