Former NHL player Sergei Berezin, who spent seven seasons in the league, passed away at the age of 52. The NHL Graduated class Relationship made the announcement on Wednesday.
Berezin, well-known for his time spent with the Toronto Maple Leafs, saw considerable success throughout his somewhat extended NHL career. However, following his retirement from hockey, he chose to forsake a family in which he might have spent a great deal of time and effort.
Berezin had a significant impact after being selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the tenth round of the 1994 NHL Draft. He was born in Voskresensk, Russia. Before signing with the Phoenix Coyotes, he spent five seasons as a player for the Maple Leafs, where he scored over 20 goals in four of those seasons.
Berezin scored 25 goals to lead all tenderfoots in the 1996–97 season. His best season occurred in 1998–1999, when he achieved career highs of 37 goals and 59 concentrates.
Berezin also had stints as a player for the Washington Capitals, Chicago Blackhawks, Montreal Canadiens, and Phoenix Coyotes. Following the 2002–03 season, he resigned.
Berezin scored 160 goals and 126 assists in 502 NHL games. He also added 13 more goals and 17 assists in 52 games played during the season’s closing stretch.
According to the NHL Graduated class Relationship, he trained hockey, played tennis, and spent time with his family after retiring. Everyone who knew him was shocked to learn of his death.
