Wout Weghorst, a Dutch international player for Burnley, is being pursued by Ajax Amsterdam, one of the biggest teams in the Dutch Eredivisie.
The Telegraph claims that Ajax is thinking of making a move to sign Weghorst under a reduced cost agreement with the Clarets.
The article also stated that with Steven Bergwijn and Chuba Akpom’s unclear futures, Ajax would be looking to acquire a striker.
Weghorst’s contract with Burnley, who will play in the Championship the next year, expires in one season, and Ajax is expecting that these two circumstances will allow them to sign him for a lower price.
Since it is expected that Akpom would leave during the summer transfer window, Weghorst will be Ajax’s backup striker and a competitor for Brian Brobbey.
The forward, who was raised in Arsenal, is hoping to leave Ajax because he did not receive much playing time during his first season in Amsterdam.
During the January transfer window, Akpom was strongly connected to leaving Ajax, with Fulham and Nottingham Forest being touted as prospective destinations. However, Ajax prevented Akpom from making the move back to England.
Though he only had a supporting role at Ajax, the former Middlesbrough player was productive, making 36 appearances—eleven of which were starts—scoring fifteen goals and dishing out three assists.
