ANN ARBOR, Michigan At the age of 89, former Michigan standout Bob Chappuis, the 1948 Rose Bowl MVP and a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, passed away on Thursday.

Following a fall earlier this week, Chappuis was admitted to the University of Michigan Hospital.

Chappuis, a halfback and quarterback for the Wolverines, enrolled in college in 1942 and left to serve in the armed forces during World War II. An obituary on MGoBlue.com states that he was shot down over Italy during his 21st mission while serving as an aerial gunner and radio operator on B-25 aircraft.

In 1946, Chappuis went back to Michigan and played for two more seasons. He lost out on the Heisman Trophy to Notre Dame quarterback John Lujack in the 1947 election. In 1947, he guided the Wolverines to a national championship and an unbeaten season.

Chappuis has a 175.3 passer rating, which is the Big Ten single-season record. With 18.8 yards per completion, he also retains the Michigan record in this category.
