Sheffield Wednesday has confirmed the signing of versatile defender Yan Valery from French club Angers SCO. The 25-year-old Tunisian international is set to bring depth and experience to the Owls’ defensive lineup. This move reunites Valery with Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl, with whom he previously worked during his tenure at Southampton.
Valery, who can operate as a wing-back, full-back, or right-sided center-back, is expected to bolster Wednesday’s defensive options. He brings with him a wealth of experience from both the English Premier League and France’s Ligue 1. During his time at Southampton, Valery made 43 league appearances, contributing significantly to the team’s defensive efforts. His versatility and ability to adapt to multiple defensive roles make him a valuable asset for the Owls.
The transfer, which has been in the works for some time, was influenced heavily by the relationship between Valery and Röhl. The German manager’s presence at Hillsborough played a crucial role in convincing Valery to join the club. Röhl’s reputation as a highly-rated coach, combined with his previous working relationship with Valery, made Sheffield Wednesday an attractive destination for the defender.
Valery expressed his excitement about returning to England, citing his positive experiences during his previous stint in the country. “If I had the chance to go back to England, I’d take it,” Valery said. “I have really felt a warmth and things that I think are normal for a human being. It’s more like that in England. You find that less easily in France”.
The move also marks a significant step in Sheffield Wednesday’s ongoing efforts to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season. Valery’s addition is expected to create healthy competition for places in the team’s defensive lineup. His primary positions overlap with those where Pol Valentin found success towards the end of last season, suggesting that the two may compete for a starting spot or even complement each other on the field.
With personal terms already agreed upon and only the medical examination pending, Valery’s signing is set to be completed soon. This strategic acquisition reflects Sheffield Wednesday’s ambition to enhance their squad depth and improve their defensive solidity as they prepare for the challenges of the upcoming season.
