Suggs’s connection to LSU helped with his recruitment. Former Grand Valley State player and current LSU coach Brian Kelly started his coaching career there. He won two Division II national titles. Kenzel, Kelly’s youngest son, was a Suggs player.

Before he received an offer of scholarship from LSU last week, Suggs had reduced the number of final colleges he was considering. He revised his top 4 with LSU included the day after he received the offer. Following that, he traveled to Baton Rouge one last time on Sunday and Tuesday before returning home to make his decision.

Before landing Suggs, LSU had been searching for transfer defensive tackles for weeks. The position gained significance after Maason Smith and Mekhi Wingo declared their plans to enter the NFL draft, taking experienced players and depth with them. LSU’s spring practice featured five scholarship defensive tackles, one of which was a former offensive lineman.

As players entered the transfer portal last month, LSU pursued senior Simeon Barrow of Michigan State and junior Damonic Williams of TCU. It hosted them both, but insiders say a big part of their choices was that they demanded more NIL money than the Tigers were willing to part with. Williams chose Oklahoma, and Barrow chose Miami.

LSU extended scholarship offers to two other transfers: CJ West from Kent State and Philip Blidi from Indiana. Blidi left Baton Rouge and headed to Auburn. West pledged he would remain in Indiana.

There are currently nine defensive tackles listed on the LSU online roster. Rookie Ahmad Breaux was pushed inside, and he’ll be joined this summer by Suggs, Paez, and five-star rookie Dominick McKinley. While LSU figures out its depth chart, Preston Hickey, the preferred walk-on, might also be considered for snaps. The spring game was led off by sixth-year seniors Jalen Lee and Jacobian Guillory.
