Trading Theodore, who has one year left on his contract with a cap hit of $5.2 million, could provide financial relief. At 28, Theodore still has many good years ahead.
The Maple Leafs have been actively seeking defensive help, both throughout the season and at the trade deadline. While they added players like Joel Edmundson, they need higher-impact players.
