The Texas Tech Red Raiders’ all-time top five wide receivers
Although Texas Tech has a reputation for turning out excellent wide receivers, these five stand out above the rest of the group to have worn the Double T.
Texas Tech football was renowned for its ability to run the ball and play defense in the past. But the Red Raiders have been known for tossing the ball all over the field ever since the Mike Leach era began in 2000.
It is therefore not difficult to envision that Lubbock’s wide receiver record books are replete with players from the current era. Nine of the top ten players in Texas Tech history in terms of career receiving yards actually played after the year 2000. Furthermore, seven of those players were on the Leach team.
at college football and at all levels of the sport, the contemporary spread offense revolution was started during the Leach administration at Lubbock. Before 2000, sure, other schools had focused more on the forward pass than the ground game, but Leach’s success in elevating Texas Tech to the national level inspired several others to follow in his footsteps. Currently, the Leach coaching tree has the deepest roots in the sport.
Even though Leach is no longer with us and Lubbock no longer uses his “Air Raid” system according to his chosen specifications, Red Raider supporters still take great satisfaction in supporting a state-of-the-art offensive scheme. Therefore, within the fan base, wide receivers continue to be among the most well-liked players.
For example, every Red Raider is eagerly anticipating the 2024 debut of Micah Hudson, a five-star wide receiver who signed with Texas Tech—the first five-star high school player to do so—at wide receiver. Given the importance of the passing game in Lubbock over the last 25 years, it makes sense that the highest-rated recruit in Tech history is a pass-catcher.
Hudson might rank among the all-time greats at Texas Tech wide receiver someday. He’s just getting started on his trip, though. Let’s take a look back at a few of the receivers who are already Lubbock legends as we wait for that era to start. The top five Red Raider wide receivers in program history are shown here.
