Ime Udoka, the head coach of the Boston Celtics, is facing a suspension after allegedly having a consensual sexual relationship with a woman on the team’s staff, according to sources. According to ESPN, which broke the story first, the affair between the engaged head coach and his assistant is considered a violation of team policy, and updates on the disciplinary penalty might surface as early as Thursday. Udoka and his longterm partner, Fatal Affair actress Nia Long, first met in 2010. The couple have a 10-year-old son, Kez Sunday, and announced their engagement in May 2015.
ESPN says that the team is debating suspending Udoka for the full 2022-23 season, although sources indicate his position is unlikely to be permanently jeopardised. The Celtics are a month away from opening their season with an Oct. 18 home game.
Udoka, 45, is a retired professional basketball player who has had a successful second career as an NBA coach. He spent seven years with the San Antonio Spurs under head coach Gregg Popovich, helping the team win a championship in 2014.
Since departing the organisation in 2019, Udoka has worked as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers and Brooklyn Nets. He became head coach of the Celtics in 2021 and led the team to the 2022 NBA Finals in his first season. This was going to be his second season with the team.
Last season’s NBA Finals saw Boston lose in six games to the Golden State Warriors. However, it represented a significant improvement for the club, which was making its first Finals trip since 2010.
Long, 51, and Udoka have been together for almost a decade. In 2020, she told Essence that they were content not to have a wedding ceremony. “Love is complicated, let’s just start there,” Long told me. “Then you start a marriage, which I’ve never been in. And there’s a reason for that: I don’t believe I need to say ‘I do’ to prove to you that I love you.
What exactly does marriage entail? Do you now own me and I own you? She added. “I don’t get that part.”
According to the Boston Globe, the pair met in February 2010. When they were both in the city, a mutual friend introduced them; Long was filming a pilot for NBC, and Udoka was playing for the Sacramento Kings versus the Boston Celtics. In 2011, the couple exclusively announced to PEOPLE that they
“This is the most exciting time of our lives,” they told PEOPLE in a statement at the time. “Words cannot express how excited we are about the new addition to our family. We are truly lucky and appreciate all of your well wishes and prayers.”
