NFLsad News for Michael John McCarthy coach today.

After rumblings of Dallas defensive backs coach Al Harris being promoted to assistant head coach began shortly after the hire of defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, the Cowboys made the move official.

On Tuesday, Harris’ promotion was confirmed by a statement from head coach Mike McCarthy.

“Al has been such an impactful member of our coaching staff and team,” McCarthy said. “I’m looking forward to his leadership in this expanded role. He’s a highly effective mentor and motivator, and our entire team will benefit from him taking this elevated step.

Harris will continue to coach the secondary, pulling double-duty for Dallas.

“I appreciate Coach McCarthy and the Cowboys for entrusting me with the responsibility of assisting the head coach in our pursuit of winning championships,” Harris responded. “We have a strong and talented group that is capable of achieving our goals … I am grateful for the opportunity to continue what we began in 2020.

Harris. 49, has been working with the Dallas defensive backs. He interviewed for the coordinator job vacated when Dan Quinn became the Washington head coach.

That job on Mike McCarthy’s staff went to Mike Zimmer … and now Harris may serve as his top aide.

Wagner will be reuniting with new Commanders head coach Quinn, who was the defensive coordinator during Seattle’s “Legion of Boom” era that was headlined by defensive stars like Wagner, Richard Sherman, K
