After overcoming early difficulties, the Lotts turned the tables on China on Wednesday, winning 10-4 and securing a postseason berth. The Chinese players Ying Yang and Jiafeng Tian had the Gimli, Man., husband-wife combo down 4-2 after four ends, but they rallied in the second half and won the match with a steal of four in the eighth end.
Kadriana Lott remarked, “We knew we had to pick it up and obviously keep our minds and heads in the game.” “The last half of the game, we just had to shake the first couple ends off and move forward; we knew we could still win it.” The Lotts advanced to 6-1 and will advance to the next round of the playoffs with one victory over their last two group stage games on Thursday.
The Canadians’ unblemished record was marred by a loss to Sweden in Tuesday’s late draw, so things didn’t look good earlier. China (3-4) used deuces in the second and fourth ends to counter Canadian singles in the first and third. In the sixth, the Lotts settled for a point after a hefty draw for three, denying Canada the opportunity to go ahead.
After Colton Lott advised the Canadians to “be scrappy out there,” they made three steals in a row. Canada stole the game-winning steal in the sixth end by taking advantage of a few Chinese misses. They then proceeded to steal two in the seventh, and their big eighth end came next. “That’s what you have to do in any (curling) discipline, and (mixed doubles) for sure because you only have so many rocks to come back with,” Colton Lott stated. “If you keep your head back there (dwelling on past misses), it makes it really hard to claw back like we just did.”
With a 7-6 victory over Australia, host Sweden advanced to 7-0 and secured a postseason berth, leaving Canada in second position in Group B.
face Thursday, the Lotts take face the United States (4-3) and Australia (2-5). “Just grab a few more victories,” Kadriana Lott remarked. “I think that puts us in a great mindset and gets us ready for the weekend.” The Canadian Press initially published this report on April 24, 2024.
