The Bangladesh Cricket Board has officially announced the appointment of former Pakistan leg-spinner and World Cup winner, Mushtaq Ahmed, as their new spin bowling coach. This decision comes as part of Bangladesh’s efforts to enhance their bowling department, particularly in the spin domain, as they gear up for the highly anticipated ICC T20 World Cup 2024 set to take place in the West Indies and USA.
The one-week training camp in Dubai provided us with the perfect platform to refine our skills ahead of the all-important ICC Women’s Championship matches against Pakistan. As we have arrived in Karachi and had a good couple of sessions, our focus now shifts to adapting to the local conditions to do well in the series.
Mushtaq Ahmed, aged 53, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the Bangladesh cricket team, having previously served as a spin bowling coach for England between 2008 and 2014, West Indies from 2018 to 2019, and Pakistan from 2020 to 2022. Additionally, he held the position of bowling consultant for the Pakistan team from 2014 to 2016. His rich coaching background is expected to be a significant asset for Bangladesh as they aim to make a strong impact in the upcoming global tournament.
The announcement was made on April 16th, 2024, marking a significant addition to the Bangladesh cricket team’s coaching staff. Mushtaq Ahmed expressed his honor and excitement about joining the Bangladesh team, highlighting his eagerness to pass on his vast experience to the players. He praised the team’s potential, describing them as “very coachable” and one of the “most dangerous teams around.” Mushtaq’s primary goal is to instil belief in the team and leverage their capability, resources, and talent to achieve success on the international stage.
Mushtaq Ahmed’s illustrious playing career saw him taking 185 wickets in 52 Tests and 161 wickets in 144 ODIs for Pakistan. He played a pivotal role in Pakistan’s World Cup victory in 1992, showcasing his exceptional spin bowling skills. His appointment ahead of the T20 series against Zimbabwe signifies the beginning of Bangladesh’s comprehensive preparation for the T20 World Cup. The Bangladesh Cricket Board and the team are optimistic that Mushtaq’s guidance will elevate their spin bowling prowess and contribute significantly to their performance in the tournament.
