After failing to negotiate a deal past the July 15 franchise-tag deadline, the Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott reached the end of the road for any 2020 talks on a long-term contract extension last summer. The Cowboys’ season ended on Sunday with a 24-19 loss to the Giants, and the embargo ended.
Among the myriad of theories, one particularly intriguing scenario places Prescott with the New England Patriots, a move that could redefine both his career and the team’s prospects.
Nick Wright, a panelist on FS1, has laid out a compelling scenario where the Patriots could emerge as Prescott’s new home.
Wright’s theory hinges on strategic draft picks and trades, specifically the Patriots trading their No. 3 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
This move would be especially strategic if Drake Maye, a highly coveted player, is available, making the pick even more valuable.
Wright suggests a trade with Minnesota for the 11th and 23rd picks, plus additional assets, could set the stage for the Patriots to fortify their offensive line and add a dynamic receiver, all while positioning themselves to sign Prescott.
This speculation isn’t without its foundation. The Patriots have been known to make bold moves, and securing a proven quarterback like Prescott could significantly boost their rebuilding efforts.
The Cowboys, meanwhile, have already made waves with their acquisition of Trey Lance from the San Francisco 49ers.
Lance, the former No.3 pick, represents a gamble by Jerry Jones, who saw value in a low buyout opportunity for a player yet to reach his potential.
With a year to adapt to the Cowboys’ system under Prescott’s tutelage, Lance could be poised to take over, albeit with much to prove.
