A former starting player with the Dallas Cowboys might sign with a Super Bowl contender.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed on March 20 that former Cowboys wide receiver Michael Gallup will be visiting the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday. Gallup did not sign a contract during his previous visit to the Carolina Panthers.
Prior to his guaranteed $4 million payment, the Cowboys released the 28-year-old receiver on Friday, March 15. The Cowboys save $9.5 million by making this move. Gallup was free to pursue a trade when Dallas gave him permission to do so.
After the Cowboys selected him in the third round of the 2018 NFL draft, Gallup has been a member of the team for the entire six-year period prior to his departure. Gallup made an immediate impression as a vital member of the offensive line, starting eight games in his debut campaign.
He quickly established himself as a key member of the offence, finishing his second season of 2019 with 1,107 yards on 66 receptions and six touchdowns. After Amari Cooper, he finished second on the team in every significant receiving category.
Despite CeeDee Lamb’s arrival, Gallup had another strong season in 2020, recording 59 receptions for 843 receiving yards and five touchdowns.
During the 2022 offseason, his performance finally led to a five-year, $62.5 million contract extension. The move followed the Cowboys’ trade of Cooper to the Cleveland Browns and came soon after Gallup sustained a torn ACL at the end of the regular season.
However, Gallup was a massive bust signing after landing his new contract. Expected to permanently take over the No. 2 role, Gallup produced just 73 receptions for 842 receiving yards and six touchdowns over the past two seasons.
For perspective on how sluggish Gallup’s play had been since the ACL injury, he didn’t produce a single 100-yard game and only had one multi-touchdown game over the past two seasons.
His final seven regular season games saw Gallup produce just seven receptions for 74 receiving yards and one touchdown.
Perhaps a change of scenery can revive Gallup’s career. The Ravens recently released Odell Beckham Jr. and could use Gallup to fill the No. 2 role Beckham previously occupied.
