According to reports, the Miami Dolphins are hinting at the draft pick they would like, and quarterback Patrick of the Kansas City Chiefs is reportedly eyeing a wide receiver. It makes sense that Mahomes and the Dolphins like the same kind of receiver.
Mahomes threw deep passes to Tyreek Hill early in his career. The offseason of 2022 saw the Dolphins acquire Hill in a trade. Hill supplied a certain level of speed that the Chiefs haven’t duplicated.
Mahomes’ observation of the NFL Combine’s quickest receiver this year made perfect sense. The Chiefs entered the summer anticipating to select a wide receiver to complement Rashee Rice after 2023 saw some of the worst wide receiver play in the whole league. (They signed Marquise Brown after that.)
When Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy broke the NFL Combine record for the 40-yard sprint with a speed of 4.21, Mahomes observed that Worthy was incredibly quick. After the touchdown, Mahomes apparently texted Worthy to congratulate him on shattering the record.
But Worthy’s quickness caught the attention of more teams than just the Chiefs.
After Texas’ pro day, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel met with Worthy, according to Hank South with Horns 247. When McDaniel questioned Worthy about why he hadn’t run the 40-yard dash on Wednesday, he grinned broadly.
I would rank Worthy as an early Day 2 player or a late first-round selection. The Chiefs will have to wait until the No. 32 pick to make their first selection because they defeated the Dolphins in the Wild Card round on route to winning the Super Bowl in February. Without making a trade, the Chiefs may select Worthy with the No. 21 pick, which might go to the Dolphins.
This season, the Dolphins do not require a wide receiver. Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle are among them. They may, however, consider adding Worthy to the squad given that they will probably be cutting ties with Waddle in the near future due to cap space issues. With Hill and Worthy running the same offence, a defensive secondary would have trouble keeping up with them.
