The 24-year-old admitted that the reduced wage cap was a factor in his decision to sign a $8 million, one-year contract to remain with the Steelers through 2021. In 2022, he will be a free agent, and he thinks a good season will significantly raise his value.

JuJu stated, via ESPN’s Brooke Pryor, “I think it’s a loyalty to my coaches and my quarterback. I think quarterback Mahomes is a great quarterback, and he will be for the next ten years.”
The 24-year-old acknowledged that he signed a one-year, $8 million contract to stay with the Steelers through 2021 in part because of the lower salary cap. When he becomes a free agent in2022, he believes a strong year will greatly increase his worth.
Without a doubt. “My worth is my worth,” he declared. “Everything that occurred this year was unique because of the low cap. Hopefully, the cap will be significantly larger next year. Being aware that every team would want to give something with my value when I reenter the market.”
In Smith-Schuster’s opinion,
The biggest loss of the 2022 offseason for the Pittsburgh Steelers was wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. Smith-Schuster signed a one-year contract worth $3.25 million with a robust incentive package that could add up to $7.5 million more.
Not long after the signing, Smith-Schuster’s mom took to Instagram and declared Smith-Schuster wanted to come back to the Steelers but that the Steelers didn’t want him.
In an interview with NFL Network reporterTaylo r Bisciotti, Smith-Schuster did confirm that Pittsburgh did offer him a contract but it wasn’t the contract he wanted.
This really does raise some interesting questions. Was Smith-Schuster’s mom wrong in her rant or just trying to elicit sympathy? And if Smith-Schuster is telling the truth, how bad must that contract offer have been that he opted for what the Chiefs paid him instead?
Honestly, it’s more likely Smith-Schuster saw the writing on the wall that Pittsburgh wasn’t going to be as competitive this season and wanted to take a shot at a Super Bowl with the Chiefs. No shame in that.
