Joshua Dobbs, a former quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, has moved again.
On Monday, March 18, Dobbs signed a contract with the San Francisco 49ers. According to ESPN, Dobbs inked a one-year contract with the defending NFC champions that would pay him $2.25 million plus an additional $750,000 in incentives for playing time.
Since 2022, the 49ers have been Dobbs’ sixth team. Following his trade to the Arizona Cardinals at the conclusion of training camp by the Browns, he had an erratic season. Dobbs was supposed to be Deshaun Watson’s main backup before the move.
During his tenure with the Cardinals, Dobbs started eight games and finished 1–7. The Minnesota Vikings, where he was 2-2 in his starts, acquired him just before the trade deadline.
Dobbs started 12 games overall and spent a significant portion of another with the Vikings. He completed 2,464 yards of passing with 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Dobbs will likely play as Brock Purdy’s backup for the 49ers in 2019.
The season prior, the Browns traded Dobbs in an unexpected move. According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, the move infuriated Dobbs, and they were not eager to play again this offseason.
“Dobbs was unhappy about the unexpected trade in August and wasn’t eager to return, but the Browns did have conversations about bringing him back,” Cabot stated.
Last season, the Browns used five different quarterbacks in the starting lineup, with Watson missing two games due to shoulder problems. PJ Walker, Jeff Driskel, Joe Flacco, and Dorian Thompson-Robinson all had starts with Cleveland in the previous campaign. When asked whether he regretted dealing Dobbs away, Browns general manager Andrew Berry declined to comment.
Berry remarked, “I’m not really focused on that right now,” at a press conference on November 15. “Over the course of the year, there will be a time for reflection on everything, but that’s really not top of mind right now.”
Despite their precarious quarterback position, the Browns managed to make it to the postseason. As the starter in Cleveland, Flacco settled into a groove and finished with a 4-1 record.
