Thus far, the Green Bay Packers’ off-season has been really intriguing. Releasing Aaron Jones and David Bakhtiari and bringing in Josh Jacobs and Xavier McKinney at the same time caused a great deal of joy and sorrow. But those actions nonetheless demonstrate that general manager Brian Gutekunst is planning ahead.
According to recent sources, the Packers may try to acquire a former opponent player in an effort to maintain their current level of development while also adding some seasoned leadership.
The Packers’ interior offensive line is indisa rray after losing Jon Runyan Jr. to the New York Giants. Elgton Jenkins is a good starter, but it would be disastrous to start him with Josh Myers and either Royce Newman or Sean Rhyan.
Although there aren’t many viable possibilities available in free agency either, the Packers ought to consider starting a seasoned veteran rather than depending on a rookie to show that they are prepared for the NFL right away.
Although Risner didn’t have a particularly good 2023 season, Pro Football Focus has rated him as a solid pass blocker in each of his five NFL seasons. Although Josh Jacobs in the backfield gives you a bit more leeway to not rely solely on excellent run blocking to be able to move the ball on the ground, Green Bay cannot afford to punt run block every play.
Although both Jenkins and Risner play left guard predominantly, Jenkins showed enough versatility in 2022 to play a good amount of snaps at right tackle, so I don’t think there will be any issues with him switching to the right side if Risner is unable to do so.
In 2023, Zach Tom at left tackle, Elgton Jenkins, Josh Myers, Jon Runyan, and Rasheed Walker made up the starting offensive line for the Packers.
Now that Jon Runyan has moved on, the other four are still there. The offensive line has become a priority for the Packers this offseason after Yosh Nijman and David Bakhtiari left. In the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, a number of people have projected that the Packers will choose an offensive lineman.
