The Wests Tigers have announced the appointment of Shaun Mielekamp, the former CEO of the Central Coast Mariners, to a new position within the organisation.

It is official that Mielekamp will take over as the team’s new General Manager of Affiliates, Foundation, and Community.

Mielekamp worked for NRL sides Penrith Panthers and South Sydney Rabbitohs before spending nine years with the Central Coast Mariners before joining the Wests Tigers.

Tigers CEO Shane Richardson said in a club release, “We are in the final stages of preparing a new strategy document for the club which includes a sizeable uplift in community engagement, and Shaun will be driving that.”

“He brings a wealth of knowledge in building and developing community programmes within the sports market, and we are delighted to have him on board.”

Shaun Mielekamp expressed his excitement at rejoining Shane Richardson and the Wests Tigers and about going back to rugby league.

“I’m thrilled to be joining Wests Tigers and I’m looking forward to having a significant impact on both the team and our community,” he stated.

This is a project that is very dear to my heart since I have always been passionate about how athletic clubs can be a catalyst for positive development and social effect.

“There’s a lot of work to do and I’m eager to get started.”

The Sharks, who want to open a season 3-0 for the first time since 2002, have made one forced alteration to their starting lineup for their encounter with the Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday.

Jack Williams has been nominated in the second row, while Briton Nikora has accepted a two-game suspension for a reckless high tackle on Viliame Kikau of Canterbury.

Off the interchange, dynamic forward Billy Burns made his official club debut thanks to Williams’ promotion to the starting lineup.

Burns, who spent time with the Panthers and Dragons and played in 41 NRL games, has scored goals for Sharks feeder outfit Newtown in their first two NSW Cup meetings.
