Browns Mailbag: What makes Myles Garrett the Defensive Player of the Year?…

The 2023 season came to an end on February 11 when the Chiefs won Super Bowl LVIII, and the Browns triumphed the NFL Honours on February 8 with four trophies in total: Defensive Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, Assistant Coach of the Year, and Comeback Player of the Year.

The NFL Combine, which gets underway on February 27, is the next major event of the offseason. We responded to your inquiries and opened the mailbag.

There is sufficient evidence to support Garrett’s award. Let’s start by examining the figures.

With 14 sacks in 2023, he matched for third most by a Brown in a season and led the Browns in that category. His cumulative sack total for the season tied him for seventh place in the NFL. In addition, Garrett is the only NFL player who has recorded at least 14 sacks in three of the previous seasons and at least 10 sacks in six of the previous seasons. He has 88.5 sacks in his seven-year career, which puts him as the Browns’ all-time leader.

However, there are other metrics besides sack output that show how a defensive player affects the game. Although it’s the most evident statistic, we need to consider more than simply this figure.

Garrett recorded 30 quarterback hits, 16 quarterback knockdowns, and six quarterback hurries by the end of the 2023 campaign. Along with his 42 total tackles (33 solo) and 17 tackles for loss, he also had 37 pressures. In addition, he recorded one fumble recovery, four forced fumbles, three passes defended, and one blocked kick.

These numbers demonstrate his ability to pressure quarterbacks around the league, his effectiveness in the pass rush, and his ability to produce crucial defensive stops. The Browns had the greatest third down percentage in the league (29.1%), allowing only 67 third down conversions out of 230 tries, therefore Garrett was essential to their success in third down situations.
