The Detroit Lions and New York Giants are working together in certain practices as they get ready for the 2023 campaign. Barry Sanders, the Hall of Fame running back, one of the team’s greatest players ever, watched the two teams battle before their preseason game on Friday. He also talked about Saquon Barkley, the prominent running back, who chose to sign a one-year contract rather than a multi-year extension at the end of his contract dispute.
According to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, Sanders is pleased with how Barkley managed his contract. Despite having to “swallow his pride” to play on a one-year contract, he thinks the Giants star has a plan for the future.
I think it was a mature way to handle it,” Sanders said, via the New York Daily News. “He probably feels like he had to swallow his pride, but I think he has a game plan, a long-term plan that he’s looking at. So I think that’s probably the priority with him. I think he has a long-term plan.
Certainly, since Sanders was slipping past tackle attempts and juking opponents, times have changed. Over the ensuing decades, passing has emerged as the primary offensive strategy, which has made it challenging for running backs like Barkley to land long-term contracts. During the 2022 season, the Giants did make him an offer for a multi-year contract, but the guaranteed amount was not very substantial. There would only have been a $19.5 million guarantee.
