The cornerback position on the Detroit Lions is rapidly filling up. The team revealed that Khalil Dorsey had been re-signed on Thursday night. Terms of the contract were not immediately accessible.
After an early spell on injured reserve, Dorsey—who was signed to a futures contract last year—became a vital member of the Lions defence. In addition to playing in 13 games (mostly as a special team member), Dorsey was one of the guys that had to step up when Detroit decided to shuffle their secondary towards the end of the season. He made his Lions debuts in two pivotal victories that lifted the team out of a midseason funk: Week 15 against the Broncos and Week 16 against the Vikings.

The latest in a slew of free agency moves at cornerback is Dorsey’s return. The Lions re-signed both Dorsey and Emmanuel Moseley, added Carlton Davis through trade, and signed Amik Robertson to a two-year contract. Vildor, Lucas, Will Harris, and Jerry Jacobs are currently unrestricted free agents in the interim. Deshea Townsend was appointed as the new defensive backs coach and pass game coordinator by Detroit, who also made a change in the position of cornerbacks coach, firing Dre Bly.
While Dorsey was eventually benched in favor of Kindle Vildor, he remained an integral part of Detroit’s special teams unit. He occasionally filled in as the team’s kick returner (12 returns, 244 yards, 20.3 yards per return), and he was often the team’s gunner on punt coverage. With cornerback Chase Lucas likely leaving in free agency, Dorsey looks primed to be the team’s gunner again in 2024.
