Joshua Dobbs, the backup quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, is already available, but an intriguing player has shown a desire to back up Deshaun Watson.
Cam Newton is a free agent currently that has not played since 2021 when he appeared in eight games with the Carolina Panthers. During that time, Newton threw five interceptions to four touchdowns.
“I’d backup Deshaun Watson,” Newton said of who he’d want to backup.
He was on my 7-on-7 all-star team, and I’ve grown to admire the person, the athlete that he is. Going through a lot of turmoil that’s behind him, I know I can provide services for him on the field as well as off the field.”
Newton and Watson are friends off the field, in the past Watson has called Newton his “big brother”. The two have a similar play style of being able to make plays with their legs but that’s not to say that Newton isn’t past his prime.
There’s next to zero chance that the Browns would sign Newton right now, maybe ever. But this just goes to show the respect that Watson gets around the league, even from former MVP-caliber players.
When Watson’s backup, Joshua Dobbs, rejoined the Browns during the summer. Although Dobbs made two starts for the Tennessee Titans in the previous season, he is still a work in progress. There is even more uncertainty behind Dobbs as Kellen Mond, who has only ever registered two completions in his career, and rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson are fighting for the third quarterback job.
In the event that Watson suffered a serious injury, the Browns might look into Cam Newton and other seasoned quarterbacks. Sayre Bedinger of Dawg Pound Daily offered the former NFL MVP to the Browns as a possible backup quarterback option.
“Even though Newton’s best days are behind him, there are certainly less interesting options out there when it comes to having options on your roster ‘in case of emergency.’ Do you want to get to a point where you would need Cam Newton this coming season? Certainly not, but for the Cleveland Browns, it would at least potentially be more interesting and possibly even better than the alternatives currently on the roster,” Bedinger wrote.
