Linebacker Jordan Hicks has agreed to a contract with the Cleveland Browns, according to a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN. The two-year deal may be worth up to $8 million.
Hicks will soon begin his tenth NFL season. He joined the league in 2015 as the Philadelphia Eagles’ third-round selection, and he spent four years on the team. After that, he lived in Arizona for three years before playing for the Vikings in Minnesota for the previous two seasons.
He has racked up 874 tackles, 14.5 sacks, 49 pass deflections, 11 fumble recoveries, six forced fumbles, 13 interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns in his career. Hicks was a member of the 2018 Eagles squad that won the Super Bowl.
Following Anthony Walker’s departure to join the Miami Dolphins earlier on Monday, the Browns needed a starting linebacker. Promptly following Jordan Hicks’ signing by the Browns, news broke that Sione Takitaki was leaving to join the New England Patriots.
Hicks will start at linebacker with Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, a fourth-year player. It’s possible that the Browns are still looking for a third linebacker.
Strongside linebacker is a part-time position in their defence because the Browns generally use nickel defence, starting five defensive backs and two linebackers. In the coming days, Cleveland will probably be looking to replace Takitaki through the free agent pool.
