When the Cleveland Browns acquired the very dubious-looking Deshaun Watson in a trade for the Houston Texans two years ago, it rocked the quarterback room. This offseason, they may be doing the same with another quarterback who has had a difficult background.
Jameis Winston, the quarterback, is a free agent that the Browns are interested in signing, per Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. Despite being the first overall choice by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015, the 30-year-old quarterback never lived up to the promise. He played with the New Orleans Saints as a starter and backup for the final four seasons after spending his first five in Tampa.
Winston was like Watson in college; both went to ACC schools. Winston went to Florida State, and Watson went to Clemson. Both beat Alabama schools to win a National Championship. Winston beat Auburn, and Watson beat Alabama, but Winston won a Heisman Trophy.
Like Watson, Winston has also been in trouble in his NFL career. Winson was suspended by the NFL in 2018 for touching a female Uber driver, and Watson had sexual assault allegations against him that got him suspended for 11 games in 2022.
Although I never thought the Browns would chase Winston as a free agency, they do need a reliable backup quarterback. Although Winston is nine years younger than Joe Flacco and resembles Watson a little more, I know that everyone liked Joe Flacco last year.
Adding Winston will be the ideal safety net should Watson suffer another injury, and the Browns are aware that they cannot repeat their error from the previous season by starting the season without a seasoned backup.
