With the selection of four of the best running backs available, the first day of NFL free agency got off to an unexpected start. As of Tuesday morning, Derrick Henry is still a free agent, but things might change quickly.
Henry, who currently leads the NFL in career rushing yards, has decided not to rejoin the Tennessee Titans. Although a breakup with the franchise that selected him was always likely, Tennessee signed Tony Pollard, a former running back for the Dallas Cowboys, on Monday to formally end the relationship.
Currently, Henry is the greatest running back on the market, and many teams still require a featured ball carrier. The Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, and Las Vegas Raiders are all looking for a possible starter. Henry and at least one of those clubs seem to be drawn to each other.
The first day of NFL free agency saw the release of more running backs than only Pollard. The Chicago Bears signed D’Andre Swift, the Washington Commanders signed Austin Ekeler, the Philadelphia Eagles signed Saquon Barkley, and the Green Bay Packers signed All-Pro Josh Jacobs, which led to Aaron Jones’ release.
With Gus Edwards leaving Baltimore for the Los Angeles Chargers and J.K. Dobbins unlikely to return, there’s a clear need at running back in the Ravens’ offense. Considering the mutual interest between the two sides and the ability for the four-time Pro Bowl selection to compete for a Super Bowl, the Ravens are considered the favorites to sign Henry.
After numerous changes throughout the NFL, the second day of free agency in the NFL has begun. Dallas had a hole in their backfield when Tennessee Titans and running back Tony Pollard agreed to a three-year, $24 million contract on March 11.
The Cowboys chose to let Pollard depart because they were unwilling to pay that amount of money. Ezekiel Elliott is one running back that might be of interest to Cowboys supporters among the other talented running backs available.
